Overview of the Process -- Renewing the Knowledge Management Curriculum

In January 2010, a process was undertaken to review and renew the Knowledge Management (KM) curriculum. The goal of the process is to renew the good KM foundation built by IAKM to meet the needs of 21st century knowledge organizations. There are four stages in the renewal process:
  • Stage 1 - Information Gathering
  • Stage 2 - Evaluation and Alignment
  • Stage 3 - Recommend Enhancements
  • Stage 4 - Implement Changes

Stage 1: Information Gathering

This stage began in mid-January. This stage involved an intense collection, iterative review, integration, and consultation effort. The proposed curriculum, which is under review and discussion, is the result of this process. Information was collected from current and historical KM courses, KM graduate programs and certification programs, from national Knowledge Management standards and guidelines, and from the general KM literature. The best thinking on KM competencies and areas of practice was used as a framework. Through an iterative and consultative process, a refined set of Ten KM Competencies was developed. The consultation process has involved internal faculty from within SLIS, other faculty within the Kent State University system, KM faculty from other institutions, and KM practitioners in many sectors of the economy.

The Ten KM Competencies proposed are described below. Each Competency has a separate page and discussion forum in this wiki. Faculty are invited and encouraged to discuss (1) the competency and its courses, and (2) opportunities to collaborate or partner in developing that curriculum, their interests in contributing to the competency, and organizations with an interest in learning this competency. In addition to the KM Competency descriptions, a Roll Out Plan is also provided for discussion. The Roll Out Plan covers Academic Years 2010/2011 through 2013/14.

Stage 2: Evaluation & Alignment

The May 7, 2010, SLIS Faculty meeting launched Stage 2 of the process. The bulk of the faculty meeting was devoted to a KM Retreat. The goal of the retreat was to engage the full SLIS faculty in the renewal process. Materials from the retreat can be found on the KM Faculty Retreat Materials page. The Evaluation & Alignment stage offers SLIS faculty, including Adjunct Faculty, an opportunity to advise and comment on the expanded curriculum proposal. Stage 2 will continue through July 31, 2010.

Stage 3: Recommend Enhancements of the KM Curriculum

In August 2010, the results of the Evaluation & Alignment will be synthesized into a recommendation for SLIS Administration and SLIS Curriculum Committee Review. The Roll Out Plan will be included. The enhancements that are accepted will be moved forward for development as funding is available and as interest is expressed by potential students.

Stage 4: Implement Enhancements

Implementation of the KM Curriculum Enhancements is expected to take up to four years, depending on levels of interest and support. The Roll Out Plan will be updated as courses are added to the SLIS Catalog. As new courses are developed, the proposed syllabi will be published for review in this wiki. In this way, the wiki will provide a public tracking tool for progress against the plan.
